Learning a second language as an adult can be challenging. But there are ways to maximize your experience in ESL classes. Learn what you can do to learn faster.  

Immerse in the Culture

Immerse yourself in American culture. From museums to television shows, there are plenty of ways you can learn more about the culture. The more you know, the easier it is for you to learn about the nuisances of the English language, especially when it comes to accents. 

For example, depending on what region of the country a person is from, they may pronounce a word differently from someone who lives in another area. If you're not aware of the differences, you may have a hard time interpreting what the person is saying. When you immerse yourself in the culture, you can familiarize yourself with different the pronunciations so that you're more comfortable with the language no matter who is speaking. 

Test Your Knowledge

You should make it a point to test your knowledge often. If you're taking an ESL class with other family members, you can spend some of your time speaking in your native language, but you should also spend some of the time talking in English. 

Improving your language skills is all about exercise and repetition. Using the language on a regular basis is also a form of practice.

Even when you visit a store, don't be afraid to test out what you have already learned. Test your knowledge in any environment where you feel comfortable and confident.  

Read As Much As You Can

Look through your books at home, and see if you can find English versions of some of your favorite selections. The book may not offer a word-for-word translation, but the story will be the same. You can use your skills to try and follow along with the story. 

Reading a story that you're familiar with is great because it can make it easier for you to put a meaning behind the words you're reading. Even if you can't make out every word in the sentence, if you only notice a couple of the words, you may be able to interpret the rest of the words. Although the process may feel like a struggle, keep in mind that you're doing one more thing to help improve your skills. 

Practice is essential to learning a new language. Consider all the above ideas as an opportunity to practice and get the most from your ESL classes.
